Education´s future -- the future in education
Our 11th annual World Learning Summit is coming soon.
—
WLS is an annual conference run by educators and learning innovators, for educators and learning innovators. The WLS 2022 event will take place in the shape of four webinars in October and November, addressing the theme of “education´s digital future”. In 1990 we talked of a “new world order” where democracy was on the rise globally. 30+ years later we are living through war in Europe and elsewhere, rising societal polarization, new forms of authoritarianism, new uses of old propaganda techniques and a 19th century military “special operation” in Europe – the age of social media and the cell phone.
Questions abound concerning our ability to address and adequately solve contemporary crises: Climate crisis, mobility and refugee crises, hunger, disasters and wars: Inconvenient truths are not difficult to spot, but how do we reflect on these matters as concerned educators? How should we think about this erosion of trust in relation to challenges in higher education? The 2022 Edelman Trust Barometer concludes that the rise of social media, mounting political failure to solve crises, and societal fears of failed futures are factors reflected in the bleakest numbers ever recorded in this annual trust survey.
What challenges for higher education? Our approaches to learning and strategies of inclusion? New technologies — old issues? Higher education´s relevance? Learning paradigms? Learning designs?
Ways of participating
You are welcome to join in just to listen. There is also a call to participate more actively.
You can find the Call for papers here.
As we have done on many occasions, we will run the summit with the University of Agder in South Norway as our HQ. All talks and interactions will be recorded, edited, and made available to signed-in attendees after the events. Proceedings from the summit will also be made available for free to signed-up attendees, available also for a fee generally, after the events.
Future Learning Lab has hosted these conferences annually since 2010, under the label World Learning Summit since 2016. Events vary from year to year in terms of formats. Some events have taken place on university campuses, some at other locations. During the COVID-period WLS went digital and will likely become a blended event in the future..
Many of our attendees return year after year, joining our community and making use of it to co-create projects and share ideas. Quite a few previous keynote speakers have signed up to become members of our network. Globally we count attendees from 35+ countries.
In our keynote speaker alumni you will find Peter Norvig (chief scientist at Google), Karl Mehta (CEO of EdCast), Matt Bowman (co-founder of EdSurge), Cathy Casserly (former CEO of Creative Commons), Jane Agbu (ICDE advisor), Sir John Daniel (ContactNorth), Keith Devlin (Executive Director Emeritus, HStar Institutte, Stanford University), Michael Shanks (Stanford University), Rosan Bosch (Danish learning spaces designer) and many more.
